Grease Couplers vs. Grease Adapters, What is The Difference?

Limitations of all the grease adapters that use a grease fitting connection to a standard grease adapter, they are designed to be used on a manual, hand operated, grease gun and ARE NOT RECOMMENDED for use on a battery powered, air powered, or a grease pumping system typically found in a lubrication shop or garage.

Goldys Brand carries 2 categories, one called Grease Adapters and on called Grease Couplers.  In order to be in the Grease Coupler category, a product MUST deliver grease to a grease fitting such as our lubrication fittings–also referred to as Zerk fittings–, or a button type fitting.  In every case the coupler locks onto the grease fitting to deliver the grease.  In our product line, almost every coupler has 1/8″NPT threads allowing the coupler to be attached directly to a grease pipe or grease hose attached to a grease gun.  One exception to this statement is our LX-1404 90 degree Grease Coupler.  This product has a grease fitting on the grease gun side that attaches to a standard grease coupler and is held in line using a sleeve and spring locking mechanism.  CAVEAT!  The LX-1404 has the same limitations as all the grease adapters that use a grease fitting connection to a standard grease adapter, they are designed to be used on a manual, hand operated, grease gun and ARE NOT RECOMMENDED for use on a battery powered, air powered, or a grease pumping system typically found in a lubrication shop or garage.  Those type of systems typically run at 4,500 psi up to a maximum of 10,000psi all of which exceed the recommended maximum pressure of 3,500psi.  Putting these types of adapters and couplers on that high a pressure creates a very dangerous work environment!  At those pressures a catastrophic failure of the adapter/coupler could drive pieces of the device into your hand / arm / body!  Not the way to end your work day by going to the emergency room.

As mentioned earlier many grease adapters have a grease fitting on them for connecting to a standard grease coupler.  Some of these adapters have a spring loaded sleeve for locking the adapter in line with the coupler which keeps the coupler locked on the adapter and grease can easily flow through the coupler and the adapter to the greasing point. Of all the grease adapters we offer, only the LX-1409 is designed to connect to a grease fitting, and it is designed for those really hard to reach fittings where access is limited and there is no room to use a standard coupler which requires you to move the coupler out of vertical with the grease fitting to allow the coupler to be removed.  If the LX-1409 looks like it matches your requirements, you may want to consider the LX-1403-XL which is a true coupler that screws onto a grease hose or pipe.  It has a locking lever to lock it onto the grease fitting, and even if the connection is pressurized, flipping the locking lever will depressurize the connection and allow for easy removal of the coupler.  Our founder uses the LX-1403-XL on one of his grease guns, and reports that it works well in almost all cases.  The one case where the LX-1403-XL does not work well is if there is little space above the grease fitting (the LX-1403-XL is 5 inches long) and this large a coupler cannot fit into those tight of spaces.  Fortunately its little brother, the LX-1403, is only 2.9″ long and can fit into most spaces where the LX-1403-XL cannot.
